As part of an loT project for monitoring wastewater pumps at Deutsche Bahn service stations, a battery-powered EDGE system was developed and has been successfully deployed since 2020. Due to high demands for robustness, security, and reliability, the use of a real-time operating system (RTOS) was essential.
The team deliberately chose the open-source Zephyr ROS for its modularity, transparency, and adaptability. Unlike proprietary solutions, Zephyr offers a verifiable codebase, long-term maintainability, and an active developer community. The presentation explores the system architecture, pattern recognition, LTE-M wireless communication, and energy-saving strategies. The system is complemented by the server software FlowNexus.
Insights from both the first and second generation of the system demonstrate how open source can be leveraged to build secure and efficient loT solutions.
